BMG Celebrates 20 Years In The Industry

With BMG celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2011, as the founder I wish to share a few of my most poignant thoughts regarding the global construction industry and its closely aligned markets.

  • People…This industry strongly remains a people-oriented business where relationships matter. It’s clearly one of its core pillars of strength. I also extend my deepest appreciation to those I have met and built relationships with throughout the world. And I share a similar appreciation for those who have worked with me at BMG and contributed to its success over the years, as well as those within the more than 75 manufacturers and associations we have collaborated with during this time.
  • Competitive…Although competitive, it is not to the detriment of an industry with everyone working together for its common good. Friends working within other technology-driven industries envy the fact that we can all visit each others’ trade show exhibits, work jointly in support of the various associations, develop and maintain friendships with people no matter whom they work with and collectively help customers wherever possible.
  • Opportunity…The inventiveness within the construction industry—from equipment to design and construction practices to creative approaches to the markets—continually astounds me. While we all must make a profit, for the most part, this industry earns it in a truly respectful, productive and quality of life-enhancing way.
  • Respect For Our Environment…For the most part, I am proud to see this industry is effectively and intelligently responding to and/or helping to lead the renaissance in developing a more sustainable world.

Brian BarlowRespectfully,

Brian Barlow, President/CEO

Reality Check: Green Buildings & Roads Growing Fast

“Sustainability” is no longer just a buzzword in the construction business. It is a rapidly expanding percentage of the commercial building and infrastructure projects throughout North America and the world today.

Rapid growth of green construction

For example, green building in the U.S. has quickly become a booming market with endless potential and is expected to more than double from $36-$49 billion in 2010 to $96-$140 billion by 2013. Many Federal, state and local DOTs are now requiring some level of sustainability and many are specifying pavement preservation solutions to stretch budgets while meeting sustainable requirements.

We have more facts, but here’s a start:

  • Buildings represent 72% of U.S. electricity consumption. Green buildings consume 26% less energy.
  • If recycled asphalt pavement usage is increased to just 25% of the average hot mix, total life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 10%.
  • Stormwater runoff can send as much as 90% of pollutants directly into our rivers and streams. Porous concrete allows rainwater to filter through to underlying soil where it is cleansed and returned to the aquifers.
  • An upfront investment of 2% in green building design, on average, results in life-cycle savings of 20% of the total construction costs.

Please feel free to stop by our booth at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2011, Booth 4855 in Central Hall 2, and share with us your developments and goals for supplying or servicing the green construction-related market. Our BMG Green division just may have some ideas worth considering.
